Part II of Financial Planning and Management Course

The second part of Financial planning and management course was held on May 13, 2007 Sunday. Mr. Steven Ooi started this meeting with the topic of “Giving”, because this is the foundation of Christian financial planning that we should know before we can talk about saving and investing. “It is more blessed to give than receive”.

Then, he continued to talk about various aspects of financial planning, including wealth protection (Insurance), wealth accumulation (saving and compound interest), wealth creation (unit trust, properties investment) and wealth distribution (will writing). Below are the overview of the second part of the course:

Session 5 : Giving

  • Benefits of Giving
  • Pattern of Giving
  • To whom do we give
Session 6 : Savings and Investing

  • Saving - Long term and short term savings
  • Investing
  • Inheritance
  • Will
Session 7 : Important Financial Statement - Budget : Asset & Liability

  • Why Budget ?
  • Hot to Budget ?
  • Asset and Liability
  • How to choose your first house ?

The responses from the participants were overwhelming. Participants found that this course was timely and informative. Below are some of their comments/thoughts about this course :

"Good, Practical... Good Speaker.. The course gave me a better picture on finance but I need to really practise it... " - Bro. Fong

"I learned on how to manage my money and the teaching regarding financial planning is based on Bible" - Bro. Teo

"I learned on how to spend wisely" - Bro. Michael

We are thankful to Mr. Steven Ooi for his hard work to put together this materials. We found it very useful not only to the fresh graduates but to all the Christians who like to take serious attention for managing their finance.

If we organize this course next year, we hope you can join us to learn this spiritual discipline of stewardship !

Final note : Think seriously about your financial situation from Now Onwards! It is not solely for the purpose of you pursuing financial freedom or retire young, but as a wise steward who takes good care the “investment account” for God.

Below are the four sessions covered in this meeting:

  • Our God as the Ultimate Owner, Controller and the Provider

Session 2 : Biblical Financial Stewardship - Our Part
  • Our role as a Steward
  • What is required to become a Steward ? 6 types of "Faithfulness"

Session 3 : Debt
  • What scripture says about debt ?
  • Debt Traps
  • Calculation of interest rate and the implication of debt
  • 9 ways to get out of debt
Session 4 : Absolute Honesty

  • God demands absolute honesty
  • What to do when we have been dishonest ?
  • Issue regarding Bribes
We had a provocative yet interesting meeting that evening. We are blessed and benefited in this course.
We all look forward for the coming Sunday for the remaining session 5 to session 7. These sessions will deal more on the technical and application aspects of financial planning..... to be continued !
